Northern Line Underground Train in a tunnel

Northern Line Underground train

A Northern Line train heading through a tunnel lights up its surroundings.

Brunel’s shield method of tunnelling was further enhanced by an engineer called Peter Barlow. He added the idea that as the shield was pushed forward workers filled the space behind with segments of steel joined together to form the circular walls of the tunnel.
