British Museum

The British Museum was founded in 1753 to promote universal understanding through the arts, natural history and science in a public museum. In it’s first few years of operation it attracted 5000 visitors a year _ but in recent times that number has swelled to a claimed 5 million visits per year. It did at one time contain natural history collections but these were moved in the 1880’s to the splendid Natural History Museum.
