Blackfriars Bridge – design features and history of the bridge
Blackfriars Bridge London. It’s well worth looking at the details on the supports of Blackfriars Bridge as they contain stone carvings of water birds by John Birnie Philip. In a nod to the direction of the flow of water the birds on the Eastern side are marine life while on the West side they depict freshwater birds. The bridge was opened in 1869 by Queen Victoria and measures 923 feet long.
