Bushy Park Water Gardens
Bushy Park Water Gardens
The renovated Water Gardens in Bushy Park opened to the public in October 2009. Back in 1995 The Friends Of Bushy Park discovered details of the original Water Gardens. This led to further archaeological excavations which enabled the original shape of the pools and locations of the walls to be discovered. A painting (‘The Cascade At Bushy Park’) on display at nearby Hampton Court provided further information on the original design of the arches on either side of the waterfall.
The water which feeds the three pools of the Water Gardens comes from the nearby Longford River. This was the original source of water for the pools and was created at the instigation of Charles Montagu, The Earl Of Halifax. The design of the pools is very similar to those constructed by Halifax’s uncle, John Montagu, at Boughton House in Northamptonshire.
