Shepard Fairey Obey Supply And Demand book review

Obey – Supply and Demand – The art of Shepard Fairey

This book will cost you but when you have a copy in your hands you will know why. From its gold embossed hardback cover through the 350 odd pages of Shephard Fairey’s (Obey) work it just oozes quality. The concept behind what just started out as a simple Xeroxed picture of a 7 foot 4 inch ugly wrestler evolves through the book and is fully explained along the way. There are many lavish photographs and illustrations which build up into an amazing body of work. You get to see Shepard’s arrest tickets along with his highly stylised reworking of rockers portraits all in a black and white, red and orange extravaganza. There’s nods to his influences throughout the book, punk rock, Winston Smith, Soviet era posters and the New World Order. No one gets up like Shephard.

Caution – you may need a stronger coffee table as this is one hefty book!
