Compiler Gary Shove has come up with a completely different take on the graffiti book with this trip around the worlds best street art. Sure, many of the pictures will be familiar to regular Flickr viewers but what he’s done is select the best pictures out there of many famous counter culture artists, shoved their names to the back pages (“There are a number of major brands hidden in this book. Why not try and find them all? Answers on page 194) and let the images and the amusing / challenging text do the talking. And it works. Right at the front it says ‘This Is Our Punk Rock’ and you know that at times that’s exactly how street art feels (and that sadly but inevitably that’s exactly how it might decline). Gary has a knack of getting to his point in an unorthodox way. Where else can you find a line such as “So when they put the flags on the moon, how is that not tagging”? All in all its in a class of its own and all the better for it.
