‘A Few of Our Favourite Fiends’ show at the Outside Institute, Paddington in 2005

‘THESE ARE A FEW OF OUR FAVOURITE FIENDS’ SHOW, OUTSIDE INSTITUTE, PADDINGTON, LONDON

20th May 2005 was a significant date in the evolution of UK street art. For the first time art made the move inside into a permanent contemporary street art gallery in London. The inaugural show at the Outside Institute at 27 Junction Mews in Paddington featured the works of 32 artists including Banksy, Adam Neate, Conor Harrington, Eine, Dave the Chimp, Shok1 and Sickboy. It ran until 19th June 2005, and was followed by a few more events, before the gallery eventually upped sticks and moved to Shoreditch and became Stolen Space.

The gallery was the brainchild of Dface, who had already been active in the street art scene for over a half a decade. The show flyer featured the work of all 32 artists.

The Outside Institute wasn’t so easy to find being in a Mews in a Paddington side street so directional stencils were painted on surrounding streets. Which is a pretty bad idea if you don’t want to get caught.
