Heathrow Control Tower

Heathrow Control Tower 2004

This is the new Heathrow Control Tower photographed on the Southern Perimeter  Road before it was moved into it’s new position near Terminal 3. The 900 tonne structure was later moved almost 2km into it’s final position on three 144 wheel remote controlled hydraulic flatbeds. At the time of the move it was 32 metres high but eventually the tower will provide a magnificent view _ steel mast sections are being added underneath which will raise the height to 85 metres. Designed by the Richard Rogers Partnership it is due to become operational in 2006 and is sure to be the new landmark building for Heathrow along with Terminal 5 itself.  See the next page for the tower in it’s final location.
