Maidenhead Railway BridgeDesigned by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and completed in 1838 this railway bridge spans the Thames at Maidenhead. Brunel wanted the railway to remain as flat as possible so as to avoid an incline on either side - so he made a brick arch flatter that had ever been seen before. At the time of opening many did not believe it could take the weight of a train but they soon became convinced after the original supporting structures were washed away and it remained standing.
